Punjab Police ASI Exam Preparation: Syllabus Areas, Topic Priorities and a 60-Day Plan

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) recruitments in Punjab and Chandigarh test a wider and slightly harder syllabus than the Constable exam, with more weight on reasoning, numerical ability and law. This guide breaks the syllabus into priorities and gives a realistic 60-day plan that you can follow alongside work or college.

First, read the right notification

"ASI" can mean different recruitments. Punjab Police recruits ASIs in different cadres (for example district, armed or investigation cadres, depending on the advertisement), while Chandigarh Police — which is under the Union Territory administration — runs its own ASI recruitments with a separate notification and pattern. Before you start, write down five things from your notification:

  1. Number of papers, questions and marks in each paper.
  2. Whether there is negative marking, and how much.
  3. Whether a Punjabi language paper or Punjabi-at-matriculation condition applies.
  4. Physical test standards (running, jumps, height).
  5. Educational qualification and age limits as on the cut-off date.

Everything in your plan should follow from these details. A pattern published for an earlier year, by a coaching site or by another state, may not match your cycle.

What the ASI written test usually covers

Across recent Punjab and Chandigarh police recruitments for ranks above constable, the written tests have drawn on the same six areas. The weightage differs by notification, but the subject list is stable.

Area Typical content Priority
General Awareness Indian polity, history, geography, economy, science, current affairs, Punjab GK Very high
Quantitative Aptitude Arithmetic, percentages, interest, ratio, time-work-distance, data interpretation High
Logical Reasoning Series, coding, blood relations, directions, syllogisms, puzzles, data sufficiency High
English Grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, comprehension Medium
Punjabi Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension at matriculation level Medium (can be qualifying)
Digital literacy Computer basics, MS Office, internet, cyber safety Medium

On top of this, an ASI candidate is expected to know basic law and police procedure: the Constitution's rights relevant to arrest and detention, the three new criminal laws (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam), FIR procedure, and the structure of the police. Even when law is not a separate section, these topics appear inside General Awareness.

How ASI preparation differs from Constable preparation

A 60-day ASI study plan

The plan assumes about three hours a day on weekdays and five on weekends. Adjust the hours, but keep the sequence.

Days 1–15: Foundation

Days 16–35: Coverage and speed

Days 36–50: Mocks and weak areas

Days 51–60: Revision

Law topics every ASI aspirant should know

Topic What to learn
New criminal laws Effective from 1 July 2024; BNS replaced the IPC, BNSS replaced the CrPC, BSA replaced the Indian Evidence Act
FIR and Zero FIR BNSS Section 173 — information can be recorded irrespective of where the offence occurred, including by electronic communication
Rights of arrested persons Article 22 of the Constitution; being informed of grounds of arrest; production before a magistrate within 24 hours
Electronic evidence BSA treats electronic records as documents; certificate requirements for electronic records
Police organisation DGP, SSP/Commissioner, SHO; police is a State List subject

Physical test: do not leave it to the end

ASI recruitments include a physical screening test with timed running and jumps, and the standards are set in the notification. Many candidates who clear the written test lose the post because they start running practice too late. Begin with three short runs a week from day one and build up gradually.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Chandigarh Police ASI exam the same as the Punjab Police ASI exam?

No. Chandigarh Police is under the Union Territory administration and conducts its own recruitments, with its own notification, pattern and eligibility. The preparation areas overlap, but always follow the notice for the force you are applying to.

Which subject should I start with for the ASI exam?

Start with quantitative aptitude and reasoning, because they need the most practice time, and run Punjab GK and polity alongside them. Law topics can be added from the second week.

How important are the new criminal laws for ASI?

Very important. Questions now use BNS, BNSS and BSA terminology, so learn the new names and the key provisions that replaced the old IPC and CrPC sections.
