Germany Travel Insurance for Indians: Schengen Insurance Checklist
What Indian applicants should know about travel medical insurance when applying for a short-stay Schengen visa for Germany.
Last reviewed: 5 October 2026. This is an educational guide for Indian students and travellers. Insurance and visa rules can change; verify the exact visa category and policy wording before purchase. This is not financial, insurance, legal or immigration advice.
Common Schengen rule
Germany follows the Schengen Visa Code for uniform short-stay visas.
What cover must address
The insurance must cover expenses linked to medical repatriation, urgent medical attention and emergency hospital treatment or death during the stay.
Minimum and geography
Minimum cover is €30,000 and the policy must be valid throughout the relevant Schengen territory for the intended stay.
What to check before paying for a policy
- Is insurance mandatory for your exact visa category, or only recommended?
- Does the policy cover the complete travel period and correct countries?
- Check emergency medical limits, evacuation/repatriation, deductibles, exclusions and pre-existing-condition wording.
- Confirm whether the embassy/visa centre requires a specific certificate format or insurer eligibility.
- Keep the policy certificate and emergency-assistance details accessible during travel.
Important distinction
Always use the current German mission/VFS checklist for documentary format and approved/accepted insurer requirements applicable in India.
