Types of Insurance in India: Life, Health, Motor, Travel and More
A practical guide to the main insurance categories in India and the concepts competitive-exam students should know.
Last reviewed: 5 October 2026. This is an educational guide for Indian students and travellers. Insurance and visa rules can change; verify the exact visa category and policy wording before purchase. This is not financial, insurance, legal or immigration advice.
Insurance is a risk-transfer contract
Insurance helps transfer specified financial risks to an insurer in return for premium, subject to policy terms, exclusions, deductibles and limits.
Life and general insurance
Life insurance addresses life-related risks. Non-life/general insurance includes areas such as motor, travel, property and other covers; health insurance is also a major regulated segment.
What students should remember
Know the difference between sum insured/assured, premium, nominee, claim, exclusion, waiting period, deductible and third-party liability. Always distinguish compulsory insurance from optional protection.
What to check before paying for a policy
- Is insurance mandatory for your exact visa category, or only recommended?
- Does the policy cover the complete travel period and correct countries?
- Check emergency medical limits, evacuation/repatriation, deductibles, exclusions and pre-existing-condition wording.
- Confirm whether the embassy/visa centre requires a specific certificate format or insurer eligibility.
- Keep the policy certificate and emergency-assistance details accessible during travel.
Important distinction
IRDAI is India’s insurance regulator. Its consumer material separates life, health and non-life insurance and provides policyholder guidance.
