Health Insurance in India: Hospitalisation, Waiting Periods and Claims

A student-friendly guide to health insurance concepts in India: hospitalisation, cashless treatment, reimbursement, waiting periods and exclusions.

Last reviewed: 5 October 2026. This is an educational guide for Indian students and travellers. Insurance and visa rules can change; verify the exact visa category and policy wording before purchase. This is not financial, insurance, legal or immigration advice.

What health insurance does

Health policies can cover eligible medical expenses subject to the contract. Coverage can differ by inpatient care, day-care procedures, network hospitals, sub-limits and exclusions.

Cashless is not the same as free treatment

Cashless treatment generally means the insurer/administrator settles eligible expenses with a network hospital under policy rules. Non-covered costs can still remain payable by the insured.

Check before buying

Compare sum insured, room-rent limits, waiting periods, co-pay, deductibles, exclusions, network hospitals and claim procedures.

Important distinction

IRDAI publishes health-insurance regulations and policyholder information; exact benefits always depend on the policy wording.
