Home and Property Insurance in India: Building, Contents and Risk Basics
A simple explanation of home/property insurance in India, including building cover, contents and common exclusions.
Last reviewed: 5 October 2026. This is an educational guide for Indian students and travellers. Insurance and visa rules can change; verify the exact visa category and policy wording before purchase. This is not financial, insurance, legal or immigration advice.
Building and contents are different
Property policies may insure the physical structure, household contents, or both. The insured value and covered perils must be checked.
Not every loss is insured
Wear and tear, poor maintenance and other exclusions can fall outside cover. Flood, earthquake, burglary or electrical risks depend on the specific product.
Documentation matters
Keep inventories, invoices and photographs where useful, and report losses according to the policy claim procedure.
What to check before paying for a policy
- Is insurance mandatory for your exact visa category, or only recommended?
- Does the policy cover the complete travel period and correct countries?
- Check emergency medical limits, evacuation/repatriation, deductibles, exclusions and pre-existing-condition wording.
- Confirm whether the embassy/visa centre requires a specific certificate format or insurer eligibility.
- Keep the policy certificate and emergency-assistance details accessible during travel.
Important distinction
Property insurance is part of India’s non-life insurance market regulated by IRDAI.
