IBPS and SBI Clerk and PO Preparation for Punjab Candidates: Exam Pattern, Punjabi Language Test and a Study Plan

Bank jobs are a popular alternative to state government posts for graduates in Punjab. Clerical recruitments are state-wise, so you compete for Punjab vacancies and must be proficient in Punjabi. This guide explains how the IBPS and SBI exams are structured, what the language test involves and how to divide your preparation.

Which bank exams can you take?

Exam Post Recruiting for Allotment
IBPS Clerk (CRP CSA) Customer Service Associate (clerk) Participating public sector banks State-wise vacancies
IBPS PO (CRP PO/MT) Probationary Officer Participating public sector banks All-India
IBPS RRB Office Assistant and Officer Scale I Regional Rural Banks (in Punjab, the Punjab Gramin Bank) State-wise
SBI Clerk Junior Associate State Bank of India State-wise (by circle)
SBI PO Probationary Officer State Bank of India All-India

For clerical posts you apply for one state's vacancies — Punjab, for most readers — and you are expected to know that state's official language.

The general pattern

Patterns are revised from time to time, so treat the following as the recent structure and confirm with the current notification.

Preliminary exam (clerk and PO)

Section Questions Marks
English Language 30 30
Numerical / Quantitative Ability 35 35
Reasoning Ability 35 35
Total 100 100 (60 minutes, with sectional timing)

IBPS sets sectional cut-offs, so you must clear each section, not just the total.

Main exam

Clerk mains covers General/Financial Awareness, General English, Reasoning Ability (with computer aptitude in some cycles) and Quantitative Aptitude, with about 2 hours and sectional timing. PO mains adds higher-level reasoning, data analysis and interpretation, and a descriptive English test (letter and essay), followed by an interview.

Negative marking: one-fourth of the marks of each question are deducted for a wrong answer.

The local language proficiency test (LPT)

Clerical recruitments require proficiency in the official language of the state you apply for — Punjabi for Punjab. Candidates who studied Punjabi as a subject in Class 10 or Class 12 and can show the mark sheet are usually exempt; others must pass a language proficiency test after provisional allotment. Failing it can cost you the job, so if you did not study Punjabi at school, start learning to read and write Gurmukhi early. Our Punjabi preparation guide is a good start.

Section-wise preparation

Reasoning

Puzzles and seating arrangements (linear, circular, floor-based), syllogisms, inequalities, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction, order and ranking, and input-output. Puzzles carry heavy weight in mains — practise one puzzle set daily.

Quantitative aptitude

Simplification and approximation, number series (including wrong-number series), quadratic equations, data interpretation (tables, bar, line and pie charts), and arithmetic (percentages, ratio, profit and loss, interest, time and work, speed and distance, mixtures, probability).

English

Reading comprehension, cloze test, error detection, sentence improvement, para-jumbles, fillers and vocabulary. Read one editorial daily.

General and financial awareness (mains)

Computer awareness

Basics of hardware and software, networking, internet, MS Office, shortcuts and cyber security.

A 16-week plan

Weeks Focus
1–4 Arithmetic basics; reasoning basics; English grammar; daily speed maths
5–8 Puzzles and seating; data interpretation; reading comprehension; weekly prelims mock
9–12 Banking awareness; mains-level reasoning and quant; two prelims mocks a week
13–16 Mains mocks; financial awareness revision; descriptive writing (PO)

Start the language preparation in week 1 if you did not study Punjabi at school.
