Insurance for Indian Students Going Abroad: Travel, Health, OSHC and Visa Cover
A country-neutral guide for Indian students choosing insurance for overseas study without mixing travel insurance with destination-specific student health cover.
Last reviewed: 5 October 2026. This is an educational guide for Indian students and travellers. Insurance and visa rules can change; verify the exact visa category and policy wording before purchase. This is not financial, insurance, legal or immigration advice.
Travel insurance and student health cover can be different
A short travel policy may protect the journey and initial period, while some destinations or institutions require a specific long-term student health plan.
Australia example
Australia commonly uses Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for international students, and visa health-insurance requirements must be checked against the student visa conditions.
Europe and other destinations
Schengen short-stay insurance rules do not automatically define the health-insurance requirement for a long-stay national student visa. Check the country’s consular and university rules.
What to check before paying for a policy
- Is insurance mandatory for your exact visa category, or only recommended?
- Does the policy cover the complete travel period and correct countries?
- Check emergency medical limits, evacuation/repatriation, deductibles, exclusions and pre-existing-condition wording.
- Confirm whether the embassy/visa centre requires a specific certificate format or insurer eligibility.
- Keep the policy certificate and emergency-assistance details accessible during travel.
Important distinction
Before paying, verify policy start/end dates, geographic scope, hospital access, pre-existing-condition rules, repatriation and whether the exact visa category accepts it.
