Personal Accident Insurance in India: Disability and Accident Cover Basics
What personal accident insurance is, how it differs from health and life insurance, and which terms students should revise.
Last reviewed: 5 October 2026. This is an educational guide for Indian students and travellers. Insurance and visa rules can change; verify the exact visa category and policy wording before purchase. This is not financial, insurance, legal or immigration advice.
Different risk, different product
Personal accident insurance focuses on specified accidental death or disability outcomes. It is not a substitute for broad health insurance.
Benefits depend on definitions
Permanent total disability, permanent partial disability and temporary total disability can be treated differently under a policy.
Exam point
Do not confuse accident insurance with motor third-party insurance: one protects insured persons under defined accident benefits, while the other addresses legal liability to third parties.
What to check before paying for a policy
- Is insurance mandatory for your exact visa category, or only recommended?
- Does the policy cover the complete travel period and correct countries?
- Check emergency medical limits, evacuation/repatriation, deductibles, exclusions and pre-existing-condition wording.
- Confirm whether the embassy/visa centre requires a specific certificate format or insurer eligibility.
- Keep the policy certificate and emergency-assistance details accessible during travel.
Important distinction
IRDAI maintains standard-product and non-life insurance guidance, but individual benefits depend on the issued policy.
