PSTET Paper 1 and Paper 2: Exam Pattern, Child Development and Pedagogy, and How to Prepare

To be appointed as a teacher for Classes 1 to 8 in Punjab, you need to qualify a teacher eligibility test such as the Punjab State Teacher Eligibility Test (PSTET), conducted by the Punjab School Education Board. PSTET is not a recruitment exam by itself, but it is the gateway to ETT (primary) and Master Cadre recruitments. This guide explains the pattern and the topics that carry the most marks.

Paper 1 or Paper 2?

Paper For teaching Typical candidates
Paper 1 Classes 1–5 (primary) Those with D.El.Ed / ETT or equivalent qualifications
Paper 2 Classes 6–8 (upper primary) Those with a graduation and B.Ed. or equivalent

Candidates who want to teach both levels can take both papers. Eligibility conditions are set by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and the state notification, so check the qualifications listed in the current PSTET notice.

The pattern used in recent PSTET exams

Both papers have 150 multiple-choice questions of one mark each, with a duration of 2Β½ hours, and recent PSTET papers have had no negative marking.

Paper 1 section Questions Paper 2 section Questions
Child Development and Pedagogy 30 Child Development and Pedagogy 30
Language I (Punjabi) 30 Language I (Punjabi) 30
Language II (English) 30 Language II (English) 30
Mathematics 30 Subject section (Maths and Science, Social Studies or other subjects as notified) 60
Environmental Studies 30

Because there is no negative marking, answer every question.

Qualifying marks and validity

TET qualifying marks are generally 60%, with relaxation for reserved categories as notified by the state. In 2021 the NCTE decided that the validity of TET certificates would be extended to lifetime. Read the current PSTET notification for the exact percentages and certificate rules that apply to you.

Child Development and Pedagogy (CDP): the highest-yield section

CDP appears in both papers and decides many results. Key themes:

Development and learning

Inclusive education and learners with special needs

Learning disabilities (dyslexia β€” reading; dysgraphia β€” writing; dyscalculia β€” mathematics), visual and hearing impairments, giftedness, and the principle of including all children in mainstream classrooms with appropriate support.

Learning and pedagogy

Policy and law

Language sections

Mathematics and Environmental Studies (Paper 1)

How PSTET connects to recruitment

PSTET only makes you eligible. Actual teacher appointments in Punjab government schools β€” ETT (primary) and Master Cadre (upper primary and secondary subject teachers) β€” are made through separate recruitment notices, usually published through the Education Department's recruitment portal. Those recruitments have their own written tests that include subject knowledge, pedagogy, Punjabi and general awareness.

A 60-day plan

Days Focus
1–15 CDP theories, principles of development, inclusive education
16–30 Language I and II, with pedagogy; RTE Act and NEP
31–45 Maths and EVS (Paper 1) or your subject section (Paper 2), with pedagogy
46–60 Full papers twice a week; revise CDP every three days
