Mandatory for Schengen visa applications
Schengen visa applicants generally must show adequate travel medical insurance covering the intended stay.
Minimum cover
The Schengen Visa Code sets minimum coverage of €30,000. Cover must extend across the Member States for the intended stay/transit and include emergency medical care and medical repatriation.
Multiple-entry visas
For a multiple-entry application, proof is required for the first intended visit, with the applicant acknowledging the need for insurance on later stays.
What to check before paying for a policy
- Is insurance mandatory for your exact visa category, or only recommended?
- Does the policy cover the complete travel period and correct countries?
- Check emergency medical limits, evacuation/repatriation, deductibles, exclusions and pre-existing-condition wording.
- Confirm whether the embassy/visa centre requires a specific certificate format or insurer eligibility.
- Keep the policy certificate and emergency-assistance details accessible during travel.
Important distinction
Spain’s Embassy in New Delhi also states that travel medical insurance must cover the entire stay and Schengen area with at least €30,000 cover.
