Spain Travel Insurance for Indians: Student and Schengen Visitor Checklist
A practical insurance checklist for Indians travelling to Spain, separating short-stay Schengen travel insurance from longer-stay visa requirements.
Last reviewed: 5 October 2026. This is an educational guide for Indian students and travellers. Insurance and visa rules can change; verify the exact visa category and policy wording before purchase. This is not financial, insurance, legal or immigration advice.
Short-stay Schengen travel
For a Schengen stay visa, Spain requires travel medical insurance covering repatriation, urgent healthcare and emergency hospital treatment throughout the Schengen area.
Coverage amount
The stated minimum for Schengen travel medical insurance is €30,000 or equivalent.
Long-stay and student cases
Do not assume the short-stay €30,000 policy automatically satisfies a Spanish national/student visa. Long-stay applicants should follow the exact consular checklist for their visa category and duration.
What to check before paying for a policy
- Is insurance mandatory for your exact visa category, or only recommended?
- Does the policy cover the complete travel period and correct countries?
- Check emergency medical limits, evacuation/repatriation, deductibles, exclusions and pre-existing-condition wording.
- Confirm whether the embassy/visa centre requires a specific certificate format or insurer eligibility.
- Keep the policy certificate and emergency-assistance details accessible during travel.
Important distinction
Always match the policy to the visa category on the Spanish consular/BLS checklist being used for the application.
